Turning restaurant waste destined for landfill into unique pieces of art.
Here at Glampton Shells HQ we have set up a shell recycling project we call “Shuck It Forward” on the Central Coast of NSW Australia.
We sustainably source used Oyster and Scallop shells from local hospitality venues and repurpose them into unique pieces of art/home decor in our home studio in Ettalong Beach, NSW.
We are proud supporters of the local community and love to promote the hospitality industry surrounding us on the Central Coast.
We started this venture to collaborate with local business’, not only to promote shell recycling but to help promote the fantastic hospitality venues and local seafood industry on the Central Coast.
As part of our Shuck It Forward – Shell Recycling Project, $1 from each shell sale will be donated to our designated ”Charity of the Month” working towards Marine Conservation/Rescue.
How it works
Collection
We collect used oyster/scallop shells from restaurants, venues and seafood wholesalers in our local area of the Central Coast.
Cleaning
The shells are meticulously cleaned and sanitized to rid the shells of any debris and pathogens and cured to kill off any germs by laying them out in the sun for a few weeks.
Sorting
We then sort through all the shells and quality control each shell into two categories:
- Category A – shells that are destined to be recycled and repurposed into artwork
- Category B – shells that are deemed too damaged/broken
Painting
Our ‘Category A’ shells are hand-painted and adorned with beautiful artworks and repurposed into unique pieces of art/home décor and sold via our online shop.
Composting
Our ‘Category B’ shells are crushed, bagged up and donated locally to the community as compost. Oyster shells are composed of primarily calcium carbonate (aka chalk), which can help buffer soil acidity and provide plants and microbes with vital calcium.
